MIDDLETOWN -- Not many people get a second chance in life but Middletown author Mary Verdick tells a story of one woman's search for happiness in her new novel, "Maybe This Time" ($23.95),iUniverse, Inc., 184 pages.

Cleo Ann King is a young Charleston doctor with a perfect life; a loving, professional fiancé, a beautiful home and a rewarding job.  But King's past demons reappear when she returns to California on business and encounters her old love, Max Altman, who is still in her thoughts.

Despite her recollection on the four years they lived together, warnings from her friends and his claims to have changed, King accepts his marriage proposal  But after she returns home, she discovers Max and his mistress have been killed and a terrible secret has crept back into her life.
Verdick says the story is one of redemption and finding second chances in life, which she admits can be hard, but a person can win.  Tossing in a smattering of political tension, Verdick also weaves the sub-plot around Cleo's ill father, an Episcopal priest living in Colorado and battling his own secret.

"The Episcopal church right now is going through a period of great turmoil and upheaval, due to issues of sexuality, and I wanted to address that issue as best I could," Verdick said.

While many authors draw upon their personal experiences to make the character come to life, Verdick claims her characters all spring from her imagination.  She claims she felt a strong attachment to them, which is what many authors strive for.

"I just got lost in the story and I think that's what everybody wants to do when they're writing,"  Verdick said.
Mary Verdick was born in South Carolina and grew up in Colorado.  Her research into the book is based on her many visits to the state, which she said she loves because of its history and the way of living.

"Maybe This Time" was born after Verdick's husband died from a terminal disease.  After taking a few years off to decide her future, Verdick's characters emerged from the back of her mind and soon the words began to flow.

Soon, the book hit the shelves.

Verdick began her career as a middle-school teacher, then moved on to an editorial position at the Weekly Reader, a national children's publication where she remained for 16 years.

Her previous novels are "Don't Let the Good Life Pass You By", "A Place of Honor", "The Unexpected Journey", "Indian Time" and the "Pal Paperback"  children's series.

She holds a bachelor's and master's degree in English and for five years taught in a middle school.  She now resides in Middletown, near her son and grandchildren.

Verdick is now outlining her latest project:  about a couple who take a cruise and reflect on their life together.
